Committees Mission Statements

Admissions Committee
To discover and educate prospective applicants regarding GS and New York City. And, more generally to assist the admissions office in their goal of cultivating the highest quality applicants to the school. The Committee will endeavor to positively impact every aspect of the students' entrance into the School. Members will participate in information sessions and host recruiting receptions for prospective students.

Awards
To govern the selection process of the recipients of the School's alumni awards. The school's highest honor, the "Medal of Distinction" is presented to distinguished alumni who have made significant contributions in their chosen field. The "Owl Award" honors alumni for their outstanding service and dedication to the School of General Studies. The "Alumni Key Award" is bestowed on a graduating senior who excelled academically and provided distinguished volunteer service to the School. The "Alumni Association Scholarship" is given to a student who has demonstrated excellent service to the school and high academic achievement. And, to create new awards in order to recognize alumni volunteers and supporters.

Columbia Literary Society
Since 1994, the Columbia Literary Society, under the leadership of Melissa Bell, GS '93, has offered students and alumni the opportunity to expand and expound their literary knowledge. Each Sunday during the academic year, the Society meets for an in depth discussion of a selected work. Taking its format from the advanced literature seminars at Columbia, members of the Society read the material and come to each session prepared for a close and serious analysis. Members of the Society submit titles for consideration as future reading material with an emphasis on classical literature. Once a semester, a guest professor is invited to join and moderate the group's discussion. Past reading lists include works by such esteemed authors as: Faulkner, Conrad, Woolfe, Mann, Tolstoy, Camus, Sartre, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Frank McCourt, Louise Erdrich and Eudora Welty.

Communications
To provide leadership to and enhance all on-line and print communication generated by the Alumni Association and the Alumni Office. The Committee is responsible for guiding OwlNet, the alumni online community, The Owl, the alumni magazine, and all other communication tools.

Events Committee
To develop and host alumni events for the entire alumni community. These events should target a specific audience in order to connect alumni with one another, the school, and the university. They are typically planned for social, networking, and educational experiences.

Membership
To cultivate and recruit new Alumni Association Board members and leadership, over see the nomination and election of new officers, and to continually review the composition and makeup of the Board. Furthermore, to encourage alumni to participate in AA sponsored events including career panels, networking nights, the annual dinner and other alumni events.

Student Affairs
To increase student and alumni interaction in order to improve the student experience and build an enduring relationship that will form a bridge from being active students to being active alumni. To enhance alumni-student relations by increasing the awareness of alumni services available to students and alumni thereby encouraging a more proactive environment in which students learn about and utilize alumni services. And to organize events to educate students about career opportunities and graduate schools and development of support networks for students in the alumni community including an internship program and job placement function.

Recent Graduate Committee
To program social and networking activities, organize community involvement, and to increase communication between the recently graduated alumni of GS. Moreover, to develop creative and interesting ways for recent graduates to stay involved with alma mater and with one another. Recently graduated alumni are defined as having graduated from GS in the past 10 years.
